Men have the highest risk of developing heart disease and certain cancers because of their lifestyle choices.

It’s important to schedule a checkup with your health care provider to talk about testing and preventive health screening recommendations. You need to have a checkup every year, even if you’re not having any medical problems.

Talking points for your checkup:

  • Your doctor will check your height and weight to calculate your body mass index (BMI) to see if you are at a healthy weight for your height.
  • Discuss healthy changes you can make related to your diet and exercise level.
  • Have your blood pressure checked yearly at your visit. If it’s high or if you have certain medical conditions, you’ll need to check it more often.
  • Have your cholesterol and triglyceride levels checked. If the results are normal, health experts recommend testing every 4-6 years. If they’re high or you have certain medical conditions, you will need more frequent testing.
  • Get a flu shot every year and make sure your vaccine record is up to date.
  • If you use tobacco, discuss ways to quit with your doctor.
  • If you drink alcohol, consider cutting back. Health experts recommend no more than2 drinks per day for men.
  • Discuss financial, food, or housing concerns that impact your health.

Preventive screenings based on health risks and family history:

  • Heart disease
  • Various cancers, including prostate, testicular, breast, lung, colorectal, oral, or skin
  • Diabetes
  • Infectious diseases, such as hepatitis C, sexually transmitted infections, and HIV
  • Stress or depression
