Sleep Well, My Friend

By Crista Murray, Alliance Benefits

We all can agree that sleep plays an important role in so many ways including our physical health. Did you know that sleep is involved in the healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels? Statistics show that ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, depression, diabetes, asthma, and stroke. Research also shows that only 21% of Americans get the recommended hours of sleep needed every night.

Some other sleep facts:

  • Humans are the only mammals that delay sleep
  • 60% of Americans experience sleep problems at some time during their adult life (insomnia being the most common)
  • More than half of Americans lose sleep due to stress or anxiety
  • Lack of sleep can cause weight gain
  • Sleep deprivation alters your immune function
  • You can survive for 60 days without eating but only 11 days without sleeping

These facts are interesting but also great reminders of how crucial sufficient sleep is in today’s fast-paced world.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

Our prayer is that you are able to find spiritual, emotional, and physical rest in our loving Savior. Be anxious for nothing and sleep well, my friend!
