Making Changes

Q:  I’ve been covered by my spouse’s employer’s plan, but I just learned the rates are going up significantly. Can I enroll in the C&MA plan?

Yes, you may enroll within 30 days of the rate increase.

Q:  Can I join the C&MA plan if my spouse's coverage is ending?

Yes, you may enroll your spouse within 30 days of the marriage, within 30 days of involuntary loss of other coverage (such as job ending), or at Open Enrollment.

Q:  What is Coverage Extension?

Coverage Extension is similar but not identical to COBRA. As a church plan we are a non-ERISA organization, and therefore we do not offer COBRA. What we do have is Coverage Extension, which offers a continuation of the same coverage you had for medical, prescription, dental and vision coverage, but does not include life insurance or long term disability.

The following is additional information you need to know about Coverage Extension.

  • Your health coverage ends on the last day of the month in which you are an active employee working 20+ hours per week.
  • You may purchase up to a maximum of 18 months Coverage Extension if you have been on the plan for 18+ months as an active employee, and if you are not yet eligible for any other coverage, including a new employer’s plan, Medicare, or Medicaid.
  • Your employer may purchase up to 3 months of Coverage Extension on your behalf. This will count toward the allowed maximum.
  • If you have been on the plan less than 18 months, you may purchase up to the same number of months you have been on the Plan.
  • If you become eligible for any other coverage, including a new employer’s plan, Medicare, or Medicaid, you must notify us within 30 days to end your Coverage Extension.
