Dependent Eligibility

Dependent children between 18 and 26 will experience many transitions as they grow toward adulthood. Become familiar with eligibility rules and notify Alliance Benefits within 30 days of any change.

Your Child’s Health Coverage

Learning to become an informed user is a vital step towards adult responsibility:

  • Show your young adult how to download a copy of their Benefits Summary Guide
  • Help them understand basics such as how to find a PPO provider
  • Encourage your child to call Highmark, Delta, Superior, or Medco to ask questions.
  • If your child is not a minor, you will not be able to ask claims questions on their behalf.

Coverage for your dependent will end on the last day of the month in which they are no longer eligible for coverage. Some reasons for losing eligibility are:

  • Your eligibility ends
  • Divorce or legal separation (your spouse’s coverage would end)
  • Your child reaches the age of 26
  • Your child under the age of 26, is eligible for coverage by another employer plan

If your dependent ceases to be eligible:

  • You must notify Alliance Benefits within 30 days.
  • You may be asked to reimburse the Alliance Health Plan for claims paid while your dependent was not eligible.
  • We can offer up to 18 months of Coverage Extension to your dependent if he or she is not eligible for other coverage. Please ask Alliance Benefits for details.
  • If your child previously ended coverage, but has since returned to being your dependent, you may enroll him or her within 30 days of the status change.

Your Child’s Life Insurance

If you purchase Voluntary Life Insurance for yourself, you may also purchase from $2,000 to $10,000 in $1,000 increments for your children.

Voluntary Children’s Life Insurance coverage will end on the earlier of:

  • Age 23, (even if still eligible for the health plan)
  • When no longer eligible for health plan

You may purchase an individual Conversion policy for your child within 30 days of coverage ending. Ask Alliance Benefits for details.
